Table Mountain Ghost Frog Charity Bracelet: A Symbol of Hope and Conservation

Posted on

Table Mountain is the icon of Cape Town city, South Africa. Hidden within the streams running down the slopes of this mountain  is a unique and elusive animal known as the Table Mountain Ghost Frog. This secretive amphibian has survived here for millions of years, and is a symbol of resilience in the changing, modern landscape in which it finds itself. In this comprehensive exploration, we dive deep into the enchanting world of the Table Mountain Ghost Frog and the inspiring work of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), along with their project partners, in conserving these remarkable amphibians and their fragile habitats.

The Table Mountain Ghost Frog: A Hidden Gem

The Table Mountain Ghost Frog (Heleophryne rosei) is a species found nowhere else in the world but in seven streams of Table Mountain. This rare and enigmatic amphibian has captured the hearts of conservationists and nature enthusiasts alike. Its striking green and purple coloration and haunting patterned eyes have only been seen by a handful of people.  The name "ghost frog" originates from the first known locality for the species at Skeleton Gorge, which is a rather dark and spooky ‘haunt’. Its species name, “rosei” is named after Walter Rose, who was a Cape herpetologist and naturalist, who described the name “Ghost Frog” as “well in keeping with its rather weird appearance.”

Despite occurring solely within a National Park, the Table Mountain Ghost Frog faces severe threats to its survival. Habitat loss, erosion, and the impact of invasive plants have all taken a toll on this sensitive creature. As a result, it has been classified as critically endangered, making it one of South Africa’s most threatened amphibians. In fact, amphibians are the most threatened vertebrate animals on the planet, with over 600 species considered critically endangered - and scores others threatened with extinction.

A Glimpse Into the Ghost Frog's World

To truly appreciate the importance of the Table Mountain Ghost Frog, let's take a closer look at its unique characteristics and habitat.

The ghost frog is a relatively large amphibian, measuring 45-55 millimeters in length. Its pale green skin, flecked with darker brown to purple markings, provides excellent camouflage among the moss-covered rocks in its habitat. It has specially adapted feet, with triangular discs and T-shaped bones in the digits - helpful for climbing and hiding in rocky, fast-flowing streams in forested gorges on Table Mountain

This species primarily inhabits the cool, clear streams and seepages on the eastern and southern slopes of Table Mountain and forest and fynbos of the  surrounding areas. These pristine water sources are crucial for the ghost frog's survival. It has specially adapted feet, with triangular discs and T-shaped bones in the digits - helpful for climbing and hiding in rocky, fast-flowing streams in forested gorges on Table Mountain.

Breeding:

The ghost frog has a fascinating reproductive strategy. Unlike most frogs, it lays its eggs on wet, moss-covered rocks rather than in water. The male guards the eggs until they hatch, ensuring the tadpoles have a safe environment to develop. Tadpoles are very large, with flattened heads and sucker mouth parts with rows of teeth that allow them to graze algae off rock surfaces.

Call:

One of the defining features of the ghost frog is its haunting call, resembling the ringing of a small bell. This call is used by males to establish territory and attract females.

The Table Mountain Ghost Frog's unique features and habitat make it an invaluable, but poorly known, part of South Africa's biodiversity. Preserving this species is not just about saving one amphibian; it's about safeguarding an entire ecosystem that is critical for freshwater health in the heart of Cape Town city.
