5 Fascinating Facts About Giraffes
Posted on
With their towering height, distinctive patterns and complex behaviour, giraffes are among Africaβs most recognisable animals. But there is far more to these extraordinary animals than their long necks.
They are the tallest animals on Earth
Giraffes are the tallest living land animals. Adult males can reach approximately 5.5 metres in height, while females are generally closer to 4.5 metres. Their height allows them to reach vegetation unavailable to many other browsers.

Their tongues are built for thorny work
A giraffeβs prehensile tongue measures approximately 45 to 50 centimetres long. Together with the ridged roof of the mouth, it helps the giraffe grasp and remove leaves and shoots, including those growing among the thorns of Senegalia and Vachellia trees, formerly classified as acacias.

Every giraffe has a unique pattern
Each giraffe has an individually distinctive coat pattern that remains recognisable as the animal ages. Researchers use these markings to identify and monitor individual giraffes through photographic studies.

Their circulatory systems are remarkable
A giraffe must maintain enough pressure to pump blood up its long neck to the brain. Scientific studies have recorded an average arterial blood pressure of around 200 mmHg, supported by specialised cardiovascular adaptations that help regulate circulation while the animal is standing or moving its head.

They are not as silent as they seem
Although giraffes are generally less vocal than many other social mammals, they are not silent. Researchers have documented snorts, grunts and hisses, while a study involving more than 900 hours of recordings also detected sustained humming sounds produced by captive giraffes at night. The precise purpose of these hums is still not fully understood.
Giraffes may be best known for their height, but their remarkable physical and behavioural adaptations reveal just how well suited they are to life across Africaβs varied landscapes.
