Buffalo is mainly known to be part of the African Big 5, the most difficult 5 animals to hunt by foot.
However, Buffalo is way less popular than its teammates (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhinoceros) and not much is known about them.
That’s why we decided to compile 5 facts about this impressive animal.
1. Buffalos can be very dangerous
Cape African Buffalos are reported to kill more hunters in Africa than any other animal.
Same as for elephants, they have an exceptional memory and they have been known to attack people that have harmed them even years after the event.
2. Buffalos are fantastic swimmers
They are known to swim through deep waters in search of better grazing areas.
3. Buffalos have a very intricate social structure
The oldest, most experienced cows, known as 'pathfinders' leading the way through the savannah and the older, stronger males surrounding the herd as their protectors while travelling.
4. Buffalos utilize teamwork
If a buffalo herd comes under threat from a predator they form a circle around their young. All of the adults face outwards in an effort to hide the vulnerable.
The adults actually lower their heads and form a protective barrier with their horns.
5. Buffalos can form incredibly large groups
They have been known to form herds of 800+ individuals.
